RJA #15: Reflection

This class has opened my mind up to many new ideas on the Internet. I do not just use Google, I have started to use a wide variety of project and feel that this is the best idea to gain better information for my papers. I am going to use delicious for all of my classes. I love being able to see all of my bookmarks where ever i am.

RJA #14a: Application Project Progress Report

For this paper I have planned that I am going to write a news article for mainstreaming. I'm going to show what people are against mainstreaming and then show facts that will show the benefits of mainstreaming. i want people to be able to read my article and be able to make the decision if mainstreaming is right or wrong for the disabled students.

I have started my research for the project. I've started to plan how I'm going to lay the paper out, and also I have started the overall outline of what the projects main goal is. I have found some styles of writing that I prefer to use, and the journalist view is by far my favorite style of writing.

I still need to finish some of my research for the paper. I have most of my research complete just trying to weed out the good information from the great information. I need to finish the outline so I can start the writing process and finish the paper.

RJA #13c: Application Project Example

http://www.nytimes.com/1981/04/26/education/special-education-dissent-on-mainstreaming.html?&pagewanted=1

In this article I really love the way the Sharron Johnson explains here information. she doesn't really through to much of her opinion around but lets her facts of information she finds so the talking. It is a really good way of writing a paper and it doesn't leave much of a counter argument, just cold hard facts. I really enjoyed reading her paper, straight to the point.

RJA #13b: Application Project Plan

I plan to write a news article supporting mainstream education.I have always loved the way newspaper journalist write, So this will be fun for me. I want to show some facts that I have discovered while writing my paper and then show some counter arguments. I want to shoot the counter arguments down with information that I have discovered throughout the process of writing my argumentative paper.

RJA #12b: Field Research Report

I had the privilege of talking to a teacher whose name is Anna Valero; she just recently retired from teaching student science in Washington State. I asked her if she believed if special education students had the right to an education. A. Valero told me that when she first started to teach she had no clue that she was going to be teaching special education students, A. Valero believed that special education students have the same right that mainstream student have, that if they do not get the same help then we are not doing them justice, we are pushing them to the side. I also asked if it is harder for here to teach while having special education students in your class. It’s harder to keep the balance between special education and mainstreamed students when special education students distract the class. I have to keep a balance between how much I am going to help and by how much I have to help the other mainstreamed students. A. Valero also says that she believes that it also depends on how severe the student’s disabilities are. If they are extreme then the school usually had a special education teacher go along with them to aid the student every question. Many of the students in my classes with disabilities just had minor learning disabilities.

RJA #12a: Annotated Bibliography, Part 3

Robert Worth: The Washington Monthly

Robert Worth of the Washington Monthly feels that special education programs throughout the United States are robbing other mainstreamed students of what they deserve. He does feel that the special education schooling is helping the ones in need but is robbing the others who do not need it's services. Feels we are wasting money that could be better spent, an estimated 60 billion a year spent on special ed alone.

Sonia Giordani: SOMETHING SPECIAL? NOT ALL AGREE MAINSTREAMING ORDER DOOMS SCHOOLS LIKE MILLER HIGH.

talks about how mainstreaming education is closing special education schools down by taking all of the students out. It really comes down to money when it is special education, Los Angeles spent 1 billion dollars in L.A. county alone. These special education programs involving mainstreaming has started the decline in special education which is having an effect on students who are more severely disabled.

My research shows the article to be relevant, and the information to be accurate money is the cause for special education to be cut.

Richard Flagle Raven's guide to special education

Talks about how the movement towards mainstreamed classrooms is considered good by the government standards. How by moving the student out of classroom that we are failing the special education and probably will cut their education short. On the other side, if mainstreaming is not done right it can lead to worse stereotypes.

RJA #8a: Quotation, Paraphrase, and Summary

Raven's Guide to Special Education
http://www.seformmatrix.com/raven/raven8.htm

People who support mainstreaming argue that removing disabled students from the regular classroom stigmatizes them and often fails to improve their academic performance. By placing these students in regular classrooms, they will have a better learning environment, be better accepted by their non-disabled peers, and become as independent as possible. Mainstreaming also provides a service delivery system that is more adaptable to individual children.

Write a paragraph incorporating a short quotation from the passage. Modify the quotation using an ellipsis and brackets.

In this paragraph, they talk about how people who support mainstreaming do not agree with removing disabled students from regular classrooms because it "...stigmatizes them..." which in turn does more harm to the child, than it would for them to be in a regular classroom. A very important reason why children with disabilities should not be singled out in their own classrooms is that normal children will learn to discriminate against the other kid's disabilities from a very young age, which will turn into a problem as adults. By mixing all students in one classroom, the disabled children will "...be better accepted by their non-disabled peers..." which will benefit, both normal and disable children in the long run.

Paraphrase the passage. Check your paraphrase carefully to make sure that it is accurate and appropriate.

It is argued, that putting disabled kids in their own classrooms does not have a good outcome in the end. The reason for this is that if you isolate disabled kids in their own classrooms, they do not have the advantage of having a good learning environment such as in a regular classroom.

Summarize the passage. Check your summary carefully to make sure that it is accurate and appropriate.

Students who are mainstream have advantages that others do not.

RJA #6c: Field Research Options

  • I'm looking into doing an interview, I want to talk to a teacher that is in the field of special education. To see what there perspective is on mainstream education
  • On the other side I would also like to talk to a teacher that is not in special education and see what here side is on the matter of mainstreaming.
  • I also would like to conduct a quick survey of what people think of mainstreaming education. Maybe go around campus asking students of there ideas or handing out a survey to some people around me.

RJA #3c: Research Question

  • Mainstream education gives the student with disabilities the feeling of being normal.
  • The teachers are not trained in special education.
  • Students with disabilities take most of the time away from students with no disabilities.
  • It cost more to mainstream education.
  • mainstreaming benefits both disabled & non disabled by showing them how diverse the world is.
  • Mentally disabled students who graduate are not at the same level as non-disabled with same degree.
  • Disabled people(mentally) may never enter society as contributing member, so school is wasted time and funding them.
  • Costs to school system to separate diversity and cater to the needs outweigh benefits and cost of separate schools.
  • Disadvantages with separating disabled students.
  • Define disabled and mentally challenged.
  • Teachers trained in special education having enough funding/supports to handle classes of mentally challenged students.
  • Students without disabilities actions towards disabled students and the effect on disabled.

RJA #3b: Research Topic Focus

RJA #3a: Research Topic Exploration

I started out by making my account on Delicious.com. I then went to my Google Schloar, and typed in,"mainstream Education" and I found many articles that are going to help me argue my point and also fight my point. I bookmarked the sites on Delicious.com so that I could come back later for a better look. I then contiuned on my search for more information on mainstreaming education. I also went to wikipedia to get a good general idea of the topic and used some of the refrences at the bottm of the page to try and get more credible sources.

RJA #2b: Research Topic

Through out elementary school leading into my first year in high school I had a problem with my reading. While in school they decided that mainstream would be best for me. Mainstreaming is when a student that is disabled is kept in the classroom during certain periods based on the students skills. Mainstreaming had really helped and by the time I got to the 9th I was reading at a 10th grade level and no longer need the help. After the help I received I decided that I would like to make a difference in students lives by helping them out and have chosen to do my degree on secondary education Special Education.

Things that i already know.
  • schools who believe in mainstreaming feel that if a student cannot function in a regular classroom should go to a special education environment.
  • Some believe that schools that mainstream prepare students for a diverse world.
  • Students that mainstream have a higher self esteem, better social skills, and it also allows the students to perform at a higher level in school by observing the other students.
  • Some disadvantages that have seen are Fear that teachers are not trained to handle students with disabilities, harm to non - disabled students academics because the students will require more of the teachers attention.
  • Mainstreaming is not putting a child child full time in to special education.
Things that I want to learn.
  • I would like to see the general feeling of teachers on mainstreaming.
  • The actual cost of mainstreaming students.
  • The statistics of how many students have been mainstreamed and what there general feeling on it was.

RJA #2a: Possible Topics

  1. Is the death penalty really more of a punishment then "life" in prison?
  2. Change regular classrooms so that mildly disabled students will be educated with their non-disabled peers.
  3. Should Disabled Veterans have to pay any portion of medical care relating to their disability?
  4. Certain diets can benefit children with autism?
  5. Should the "Right to Die" be Considered a Right?
The topic that I am going to write about is Change regular classrooms so that mildly disabled students will be educated with their non - disabled peers.
